A very common question from parents of students who want to learn to sing is whether they need to buy a microphone or not. Let's take a look at that question and see how it may apply to your student's situation.

Right from the start we thought we'd mention one important thing: Most students do not need a microphone immediately when they are first getting started with voice lessons. Please do not feel that you need to buy one in order to learn how to sing or to do voice lessons!

That being said, there are three primary reasons that a singer would want to buy a microphone:

1) The student intends to record songs to share with the world

2) The student intends to record themselves singing for practice purposes

3) The student intends to use the microphone for performance purposes

The main reason we would actually recommend that somebody buy a microphone would be number one, when a student wants to record songs to share with the world. In this case a microphone is necessary, unless you were to go to a recording studio. With modern technology musicians are recording themselves at home on their computers and a recording studio is not always necessary.

If a student wants to record themselves singing for practice purposes then most of the time the built-in microphone from a smart phone or computer will work just fine. For this reason, purchasing a microphone for this use is not usually warranted.

Lastly, if a student wants to use a microphone for performance purposes, then they usually would not need to purchase one, anyway. Any event or venue at which a performance would take place should have a microphone for them to use, so there would not be any need to buy one. For some singers, using a specific microphone would be of particular value (perhaps to have a microphone of a certain color for esthetics, or one that particularly sounds good with their voice). Even then, this is normally only important for musicians who are more advanced, and would not usually apply for beginning/intermediate students.

In summary, most students will only need to purchase a microphone if they intend to record songs to share with the world, or if they have a special case in which having their own microphone for performance purposes is of particular value.

It is often fun for students to sing with a microphone and feel like they are up on stage performing. When students don't have a specific need for a microphone for recording or performing live, if they enjoy "putting on a show" in the living room as if they're up on stage then this actually can be beneficial, even if the microphone is not plugged into anything. The reason why is that we sing best when we are more at ease and let our bodies do what they do naturally, rather than thinking too hard about what we are doing when we sing. Pretending to perform has a psychological effect that allows students to sing more "freely" than if they were standing there rigidly. For some students this may be very beneficial, even though they are not actually singing through the microphone as usual.
